Clouet, François

(ca. 1515-1572)

   painter

   Born in Tours around 1515, François Clouet, a painter of the French Renaissance, was the son of jean clouet and is also known by that name. He developed his talent in his father's workshop, became painter to the king in 1541, and perhaps traveled to Italy around 1549-50. Like his father, whose style he imitated, he produced many drawings. The model's faces there are portrayed with gentleness yet serenity and a sense of animation (La Reine Marguerite enfant; Catherine de Médicis). Few of his paintings, however, have survived, except some portraits (Pierre Quthe, 1562; La Duchesse de Bouillon; Jeanne d'Albret; Portrait équestré de François I). Attributed to Clouet is Le Bain de Diane. The theme, the form and shapes, and the elegant character of his poses reflect his ties with the mannerism of the Fontainebleau school. He also painted a Dame au bain, which seems to be the prototype of a series that doubtlessly was produced in his studio up to the beginning of the 17th century.
